About this course
Drilling Operations Fundamentals takes you from "what is a drilling rig?" to reading a daily drilling report with confidence. Across ten modules and thirty lessons you will learn how wells are planned and constructed, what each major rig system does, how the drill string, bit and drilling fluid work together, why casing and cement matter, how pressure is kept under control, and how crews work safely on a rig site. Each lesson combines clear written notes, labelled diagrams, a downloadable study sheet and review questions. Short instructor videos are being recorded and will be added to lessons as they are completed. The course closes with a fictional well-construction case study and a final examination. This is an introductory education course. It does not replace site induction, operator procedures, employer training or accredited well-control certification.
What you will learn
- Explain the purpose of oil and gas drilling and the main stages of the well-construction lifecycle.
- Identify the major systems on land and offshore rigs and describe what each one does.
- Describe the components of the drill string, bottom-hole assembly and common drill-bit types.
- Explain the functions of drilling fluid, trace the circulation path and interpret basic fluid properties.
- Describe why casing is run and cemented, and explain the idea of well barriers.
- Explain hydrostatic and formation pressure, recognise possible kick indicators, and describe the purpose of a blowout preventer at awareness level.
- Describe routine drilling operations such as drilling ahead, making connections and tripping.
- Apply hazard-recognition, permit-to-work and stop-work principles to rig-site scenarios.
- Use common rig terminology and abbreviations and read the main sections of a daily drilling report.
